Nespresso's intensity scale runs from 1 to 13 and measures the coffee's body, bitterness, and roast level—not caffeine content. High-intensity pods (10+) are characterized by dark roasting, bold flavor, and a thick, syrupy body. These coffees often have notes of dark chocolate, toasted nuts, and roasted grains.
The dark roasting process caramelizes sugars and develops oils, creating that signature bold taste. It's important to note that intensity doesn't directly correlate with caffeine—a light roast can actually have slightly more caffeine than a dark roast because the roasting process breaks down some caffeine molecules.
